Mission Statement
The mission of the Virginia Educational Media Association is to be the recognized voice for excellence in Virginia’s school libraries through the promotion of literacy, information access and evaluation, love of literature, effective use of technology, collaboration in the teaching/learning process intellectual freedom, professional growth, instructional leadership and lifelong learning.
Strategic Plan
VEMA advocates for implementation of AASL’s Standards for the 21st Century Learner
- Develop and post an explanation of Standards for the 21st Century Learner
- Develop and post on the VEMA Web page the alignment of Linking Libraries and Academic Achievement and Standards for the 21st Century Learner
- Provide conference sessions to broaden understanding of the Standards for the 21st Century Learner
- Post links on the VEMA Web page to AASL and other resources that support the implementation of Standards for the 21st Century Learner
- Create and make available promotional materials for Standards for the 21st Century Learner
VEMA advocates for development and support of libraries as learning communities
- Model and teach 21st Century skills
- Partner with all stakeholders in modeling and teaching the concepts of Internet safety
- Recognize that students are digital natives and adapt instructional strategies accordingly
- Educate decision makers of the need to support student learning through the use of Web 2.0 technologies
- Encourage and support the creation of libraries that are vibrant, dynamic, forward-looking spaces with a welcoming atmosphere
VEMA advocates for collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure student academic success
- Establish collaborative relationships with stakeholders
- Maintain and post on the VEMA Web page a database of other professional conferences
- Post on the VEMA Web page opportunities to become involved in other professional organizations
- Encourage individuals to present at conferences to enhance collaborative relationships
- Create and post on the VEMA Web page a searchable database illustrating successful collaborations
- Post on the VEMA Web page links to existing library promotional videos and public service announcements
- Post on the VEMA Web page grant opportunities and guidance for writing grants
- Gather and disseminate information to support advocacy efforts.
VEMA advocates for membership in professional organizations to support Virginia’s school libraries
- Develop and implement a membership recruitment plan
- Revise the membership brochure
- Create mentoring programs
